TEXTS:

·        Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West

·        The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith

·        The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

·        a dictionary, a thesaurus, and The Scott, Foresmann Handbook for Writers

GOALS: by studying some examples of twentieth-century American fiction, we will:

·        Learn to read, write, think, and speak persuasively and coherently.

·        Learn to understand, refute, and summarize arguments; to formulate and develop logical, well supported arguments; to recognize false or invalid or illogical arguments.

·        Learn to plan, write, edit, read, defend, and comment on papers.

·        Learn to express and defend ideas orally and in writing.

REQUIREMENTS:

·        Reading assignments.  YOU MUST KEEP UP.

·        Written and oral assignments.

·        Class participation and presentations.

·        Two in-class essays, two revisions, and one final paper with oral report.

·        Three short-answer tests.  Occasional unannounced short-answer or short-essay quizzes.

·        Individual meetings with the instructor.

·        Group work.

CLASS ATTENDANCE:

·        You may miss two classes without penalty.  A third unexcused absence lowers your final semester grade one full step (from C+ to D+, for example).  The fourth unexcused absence fails you.  Three lates equal one absence.

·        Student athletes (and other students who know in advance that they will miss a class) must complete assignments BEFORE THE DAY THEY WILL MISS.

·        If you skip a day on which you are scheduled to give a presentation, you cannot receive credit for that assignment.  THINK AHEAD.

·        Students who think that they have a legitimate excuse for an absence must speak with me the day immediately following the absence.  Make sure I change the absence in my grade book.

·        If class is cancelled for some reason, come to the next class with both days’ assignments ready.

I expect you to be in class and on time.  I expect you to stay, pay attention, and participate for the full time.  I expect you to avoid eating, drinking, and chewing gum in class.  I expect you to respect yourself, your fellow classmates, and me.

GRADE

·        50%:  essays and revisions.

·        25%:  short-answer tests (and any quizzes I might give to check up on your reading progress).

·        25%:  class assignments and participation.

SYLLABUS

Read the assignments BEFORE class.  “Read” means to study, to know not only what the writer wrote, but also why he or she wrote it.  Ask yourself questions about what you read.  My advice is to keep a reader’s notebook in which you write for a few minutes right after you read an assignment.
