TEXTS:

·        Things Fall apart by Chinua Achebe

·        One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

·        Clear Light of Day by Anita Desai

·        A dictionary and a thesaurus and a handbook

 OBJECTIVES:

·        To acquire some knowledge of non-western literature.

·        To strengthen your abilities to read, think, speak, and write about literature and ideas.

REQUIREMENTS:

·        Reading assignments:  Read in their entirety before class and (ideally) again after class.  BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS AND/OR WRITE ABOUT THE DAY’S READINGS.  You should keep a reading notebook in which you summarize what you have read and write down any questions you want to ask in class.  I will also be asking you to post comments on the class web page.

·        3 Tests.  3 Essays.  2 revisions.

·        Class attendance and participation.

ATTENDANCE:

·        A fourth unexcused absence lowers your final semester grade a full step [from B to C, for example].  You fail the class after the fourth unexcused absence.

·        Three lates equal one absence.

·        YOU must let me know if you have a legitimate excuse for missing class – before the day the absence occurs, if not before.  Make sure I change the notation in my grade book.

·        Student athletes (and other students who know in advance that they will miss a class) must complete assignments BEFORE THE DAY THEY WILL MISS.

·        If class is cancelled for some reason, you should come to the next class prepared for both days’ assignments.

·        Late papers go down a grade for each school day they are late.

·        I expect you to be in class, on time, and prepared.  If you come to class unprepared, you will be counted absent.  I expect you to stay and pay attention for the hour.  I expect you to avoid eating, drinking, and chewing gum during class.  I expect you to respect yourself, your fellow classmates, and me.

GRADE:

·        50%:  3 essays and  1 revision.

·        40%:   tests

·        10%:   class participation

If you cheat, you fail.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

“Read” means “read critically,” i.e., read carefully for content, style, and meaning.  We will be trying to understand what the writer is saying (theme) about his or her subject.  I expect you to become a better reader as the semester goes along.  Take notes, ask questions, make connections, and I will occasionally quiz you or ask you to write about the day’s reading assignment.
