There is a place for everyone who wants to work on behalf of bird conservation
from monitoring birds in your back yard to helping scientist study
wintering habitats of Neotropical migrant songbirds.

Volunteer opportunities with local contact persons:

Breeding Bird Survey: Sponsored by U.S. Geological Survey. North Carolina contact person is Mark Johns.

Colonial Waterbird Project:  The NCWRC Waterbird Project works to protect waterbirds along our coast. We often need help posting sites to protect nesting waterbird, monitoring nesting colonies and educating the public about waterbird conservation. Experience identifying North Carolina's waterbirds is helpful. If you are interested in volunteering for the NCWRC Waterbird Project contact Sue Cameron, Waterbird Biologist, @ phone: 910-325-3602 or email camerons@coastalnet.com.

Duke Forest Bird Survey: Experienced birders needed for a project in Duke Forest (near Duke University) that will count birds throughout the seasons with methodology similar to the Christmas Bird Count. A count compiler is also needed. Work includes collecting and verifying data from all the teams and entering the data in a database or spreadsheet. Contact: Bobbie Collins-Perry, New Hope Audubon Society, (919) 403-8345, bobbiecp@yahoo.com

Ft. Bragg, North Carolina: Volunteers are needed MAPS mist-netting stations from May-August during early mornings. For details contact: Susan Campbell, (910) 949-3207, email: ncaves@utinet.net or Alan Schultz, (910) 396-7506 ext. 111, email: schultza@bragg.army.mil

Mini-breeding Bird Survey: Experienced birders needed to run routes in Orange, Chatham and Durham counties. Methodology similar to the National Breeding Bird Survey, but only one county is targeted at a time. Each county has 8-14 routes, each ten miles long with stops every half mile. At each stop the observer counts all birds heard or seen within three minutes. For information and contacts: http://www.unc.edu/~rhwiley/mbbs

Piping Plover Survey:   For details, contact Sue Cameron, Waterbird Biologist, @ phone: 910-325-3602 or email camerons@coastalnet.com.  The following form is used for observations. (Piping Plover Non Breeding Observation Form)

Project Chimney Swift :  Wake Audubon will begin Phase I of Project Chimney Swift, Fall 2001.  The purpose of the project is  to identify the major chimney roost sites that swifts use in Wake County during autumn migration. This inventory should provide long-term roost site protection for this species. Volunteers needed to help locate Chimney Swift roosts across the county during a two week period in early September. A planning meeting/training session will be held in August 2001. Please Contact John Connors for information: 733-7450 ext. 602 or at his e-mail: John.Connors@ncmail.net

Volunteer opportunities sponsored by national groups:

Swift Watch:  The Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary in Virginia is seeking continent-wide information on chimney swift roost sites.  We have recently launched a website to that effect which can be accessed at Center for Conservation Biology | Opportunities.  This effort has two purposes.  The first is to generate a range-wide registry of communal roost sites for the species.  The second is to access information on spatial and temporal patterns of migration to assist in the long-term conservation of chimney swifts and their important stopover habitats.

Citizen Science Opportunities sponsored by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology

Project Martin watch: Sponsored by the Purple Martin Conservation Association

Operation Rubythroat:  The Hummingbird Project:   An award-winning cross-discpline web-based project (http://www.rubythroat.org) in which participants in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America collaborate to study the behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.   Teachers and students (K-12) especially are invited to participate in this web-based project.  The project is an outreach initiative of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, York, South Carolina.
